When the designers at JMKA Architects took on the project, this once classic mid-century home had been dressed as a colonial — right down to the clapboard aluminum siding. The goal of this renovation was to bring it back to its mid-century roots, with the modern conveniences the home owners desired. Before the renovation, the kitchen lacked style and underwent the most significant transformation during the overhaul of the home. The design team knew they wanted to evoke the mid-century vibe this kitchen lacked, while allowing it to flow with the rest of the home.
The most obvious change in this kitchen came with the color selections. Mid-century design is about pastel colors, simple flat panel doors, and appliances with rounded corners & metal pulls. With these trends in mind, the JMKA design team set out to craft the perfect kitchen for this 1950s home. The kitchen was transformed from a contractor- style traditional design into a sleek, mid-century modern kitchen with all the bells and whistles.
This one-of-a-kind design features a floor-to-ceiling overhaul that is bathed in natural light. Crisp colors, fun accents, and functional design created the perfect culinary sanctuary and gathering place for this home. The stunning oak floors feature 2 1/4″ quarter sawn red oak to blend with the flooring in the rest of the open layout. The cohesion with the open floor plan from the dining to living to kitchen areas creates the ideal flow for this mid -century design.
In order to echo the cathedral ceiling found in the main living space, the designers raised the ceiling the kitchen, creating an expansive, open space. The windows we replaced to enhance the flow of natural light, yielding a bright, warm area. Custom overlay was created for the cabinets in order to provide a unique design reminiscent of the era. The up er cabinets feature Benjamin Moore white (PM-2), while the lowers provide the perfect balance with Antique Gloss (CSP- 695) and Apple Blossom (479). The bright, fun colors are the perfect accent to this mid-century kitchen.
One of che most eye-catching accents in the kitchen is the pendant lighting found above the sink area and counters. Carefully selected by the JMKA designers to provide the perfect focal point, they are mid-century pendants by Astron with a flare in orange. The eye is immediately drawn to these striking fixtures. The appliances in the kitchen offer modern convenience while blending perfectly with the mid-century style of the space. The refrigerator is a 36″ GE Stainless Steel Profile; the Oven is a 30″ Bosch single wall oven with cooktop; the Hood is a Zephyr Gust under-cabinet; and the Dishwasher isa Bosch Ascenta Series Stainless Steel.
With careful attention to detail, the JMKA Architects design team has transformed this once outdated kitchen into a modern masterpiece evocative of mid-century style. Bright colors, stainless steel appliances, and rich oak floors flow easily with the rest of the home.
